Lisbon: The People's Parade, April 25, 2024

Every April 25, Portugal commemorates the Carnation Revolution which overthrew a fascist dictatorship in 1974. The day begins with vendors selling carnations. In the morning there’s a military parade, seen in this video: ua-cam.com/video/eYlYHDeTga4/v-deo.html. Then, in the afternoon comes the People’s Parade. It starts out like the world’s largest “passeggiata,” as thousands stroll up and down...

I’ve never been in the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon, but I’ve been *on* it. Visitors are encouraged to walk on the roof, climbing gently up to great views of the River Tagus. It looks a bit like a moonscape or perhaps a desert - with the April 25 Bridge rising above it like a mirage. The "moonroof" video is from 2021, I've updated with some context shot in 2023.

I remember all late 97 to early 98 getting this branch and model of tube that smelt liked burning electric cables when the doors closed to High Barnet from Archway then finishing off with the bus 84 into Potters Bar to get to school, this instead of using the money given to me by my parents to get the BR from Finsbury Park to Potters Bar all so I could use the price difference to save up for my Sony Playstation which I got in March 98 and had confiscated by my dad April that same year😅.

Listen - people still had TV/magazine/radio addictions, just cos they didnt have a smartphone to be glued to in the street, many people were still obsessed with the media and brainwashed by a lot of shit. It wasnt a different planet. And as far as the internet and social media, there was still chat rooms and message boards where ppl would publicly comment and talk about themselves or a range of topics. Future generations need to be aware of this and not think it was like a completely different world.

4:53 Green Park to Stanmore - 1998 new tube trains were on the Jubilee Line. I lived in Brondesbury Park Road 1996-1999 and caught the Jubilee line from Willesden Green everyday - as at the time I was working all over london for M&S - and these trains were initially running empty amid the older trains in 1997 and by 1998 the newer ones were in service - although I am not sure if it was a gradual introduction. I just remember the newer trains stopping at Finchley Road (where I often changed for the Met) but being advised that these new ones were not yet in service.

Amazing, as late as 1998 one could have used really old trains! The new train is clearly on the Jubilee Line. The typical 90s patterned upholstery was sadly replaced later by some inferior design. Also note the distinctive sound only the Jubilee Line makes.
